A Pipeline Program to Law School.

Judge Rubén Castillo

Castillo Scholars, conceived to help students from underprivileged backgrounds, was named in honor of Ruben Castillo (BA ’76), the first Latino to be named a judge, and later chief judge, of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Under the leadership of the founders, Fernando Hernandez, and Elizabeth Flores, and the immediate preceding board, the program is expanding to accommodate the needs of students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the legal field.

Our Programs

Our Mentorship includes three main parts that aim to help our mentees achieve both short-term goals and gain a long-term understanding of their objectives as future legal professionals.

  • Our mentorship pairs aspiring pre-law students with mentors from different schools who previously successfully navigated the law school application process and are currently enrolled in law school or recently matriculated from law school. We consider students’ interests, passions, and unique backgrounds and match them to the best of our ability with mentors who share their lived experiences and help them on this journey.

  • Our primary goal is to provide information and education to aspiring law students from underprivileged communities. We offer a wide range of events on how to navigate the law school application process.

Additionally, we believe representation and connections matter. We invite speakers from different sectors of the legal profession to speak to our mentees and connect with them.

  • We recognize that this is a major challenge to first-generation students from underprivileged communities. The program continuously shares resources about scholarships, programs, and opportunities with our mentees and alumni.
